using black and white

Using black and white

I made an image of a building: a mushroom house in pencil and pen in my sketch book.
followed by a line copy size A3
then I followed the instructions, and played around with the scans and the software on my computer to invert the black and white, and try and make a 'readable' image. Here are some examples

 I am just starting with this kind of software, and I am not in full control of what I'd like to do.

this one is a little bit better

 At this point, I realised that
  •  my command of the software limits me, and I would need much more experience to produce an image I'm really happy with from the original artwork.
  • my choice of original artwork may not be best suited for this kind of 'graphic image'.
  • I have learnt a lot about manipulating a black and white image from my original drawing. An example would be making the lines thicker, and making sure that they are limiting blocks that can be filled in later without 'bleeding' in the surrounding details.

Asked to find an example of other illustrators' work which I could be described as 'graphic', I immediately thought of images I recently saw in an exhibition about Toulouse Lautrec:

  Here Toulouse Lautrec made sketches of Jane Avril dancing (from an image in a leaflet I think). Then he made a line drawing (etching) which shows  his selection of the image, that became a graphic image, and incorporated it within the whole poster design.

and here is another example of a graphic image.
