Choosing content #2

(Something went wrong when I was putting my blog together, I couldn't write or put new pictures where I wanted, so I decided to continue here!)

I explored different images of men by a window

some sitting, some standing,

picking some pictures for mood inspiration too

I realised that I may need some architectural details too, but picked a more close up frame
This 'film noir' inspired sketch gave me
a new direction
I decided that my 'austere man' would have a kind of 'film noir' theme, which would be convenient as I'm not that good with details like tables, wall mouldings etc.

First attempt: A3 Charcoal on paper

Although I wasn't entirely unhappy with this image, I thought my technical ability to draw the window etc wasn't good. I also thought that I hadn't used much of the austere moodboard textures.

This was my second attempt. I didn't dislike it and thought that the window panes started to be reflecting the fabrics and grids of the mood board. However, it needed much more work, especially in the area with the telephone (it doesn't even look like one yet).

I stopped working on this image as I had attempted to make the shadows of the window fall on the man in a 'film noir' style, and the result was not effective, a bit ridiculous I thought.

The irony is that the extract of text that the exercise was based on came from 'The Daffodil Affair'. Being curious, I ordered the book. It is a remarkable story as it has aged very badly. Much of this story appears absolutely ridiculous today!

I liked this exercise and enjoyed the way I was guided by a story and the references I gathered. I think if I had time, I could have tried a different approach also with a collage style. But is it possible when showing an image portrait like? the only illustration I know along those lines are those of Charlie and Lola. I would like to see what other students have come up with too!
